Details : Squadron Leader Bharat Bhushan Koshal was commissioned in the Flying (Pilot) Branch of the Indian Air Force in .January, 1963. He has been commanding a Helicopter Unit .since February, 1974. On the 20th January, 1975, when a earth-quake caused vast damage in Himachal Pradesh, Squadron Leader Koshal was called upon to undertake rescue and relief work. He immediately positioned a detachment of his Helicopters at Pooh. From there he flew to Leo which was one of the worst affected places and was in urgent need of help. Even though there was no place to land, he very skilfully manoeuvred his helicopter and landed safely. Very soon he .got a place prepared for other helicopters to land. Despite extremely bad weather, his detachment airlifted doctors and large quantities of medicines and relief supplies, and evacuated casualties. He himself flew 52 sorties. His efforts resulted in the timely relief to the affected people. Squadron Leader Bharat Bhushan Koshal thus displayed courage, leadership and devotion to duty of a high order.
