Zaheeruddin opted for the RPAF. He raised the first fighter squadron of the PAF - No.5 at Peshawar, out of the assets left behind by No.1 Squadron IAF. In November 47, he flew the Pakistani Government Representative Sardar Alam to Gilgit airport in a Harvard to officially take control over Gilgit Province. He also few Major Brown out of Gilgit the same month. He left the RPAF in 1949. Held the rank of Wg Cdr. He joined Lahore Flying Club as CI . He was killed in a Cessna Crash in April 1957. His son is Farooq Ahmed , a Captain in the PIA.
